Marcus Calvin Smith, 81, of Pembroke, Va., died Saturday morning, April 25, 2009, at the home of his son in Newport News, Va., after a long illness. Born on May 29, 1927, in Giles County, he was a son of the late Albert M. and Beatrice Williams Smith.

Marcus was veteran of the United States Army in World War II, a former deputy sheriff of Giles County, and was retired as custodian for his church. He was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, active in the New River Ward in Pembroke and in the Newport News Ward serving as Bishop and in many other callings in the church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Shirley Williams Smith; and a brother, Jack Smith. He leaves to cherish his memory his son and daughterin-law, Dale and Tracey H. Smith, of Newport News, Va.; his daughter, Lana S. Marallo, of Las Vegas, Nev.; his five grandchildren; and his four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2009, in the New River Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Pembroke with Bishop Gary Scott presiding. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the church from noon until 1 p.m. before the services.
