Roy Richmond Smith, Jr (Rick) passed away peacefully on January 23, 2020, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Abingdon, Virginia on November 25, 1958 to the late Dr. Roy Smith and Catherine Sampson Smith. After graduating as co-valedictorian from Lebanon High School in 1977, he enrolled in Virginia Tech. In 1981, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance, and returned in 1998 as an Administrative Faculty member where he remained until his retirement in December 2019.

Roy loved participating in and watching athletic events. A true and loyal Hokie, he could always be found at Virginia Tech football and basketball games. However, his greatest pride and love were for his two granddaughters, Rickie and River.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 35 years, Jayne; his daughter, Ashley Crawford (Brandon) of Christiansburg, Virginia; granddaughters, Rickie and River Crawford; sister, Cathy Smith-Slaughter (Wake) of Raleigh, North Carolina; mother-in-law, Jackie Casey (Craig) of Durham, North Carolina; brothers-in-law, Jay Baumgardner III (Tricia) of Dana Point, California, Jon Baumgardner (Gina) of Counce, Tennessee, Joel Baumgardner (Jacquie) of Lafayette, Indiana; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be conducted on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at 2:00 pm in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel. Family will receive friends from 12-2 pm Sunday at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive SW, Blacksburg, VA. Please feel free to dress in Virginia Tech attire or Hokie colors as a special tribute to Roy.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Cancer Society are preferred.
