Smith, Joseph Howard

Joseph Howard Smith, 65, of Christiansburg, was born October 15, 1953, in Richmond, VA to Wilton Thomas and Ethel Lancaster Smith, and went home to heaven on December 13, 2018.

He was a graduate of Radford high School class of 1972. He lived most of his early life in Snowville and Radford. He attended New River Community College and received his AS Degree from Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, FL.

Joe was a veteran of Vietnam and Desert Storm, having served in the Air force from 1973-1993 as a computer technician. He worked for 18 years as an x-ray tech, mostly at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg, VA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Charlotte Wells; sister-in-law, Ruth Smith; brother-in-law, Ervin Crisco; and nephew, Robert ‘Bobby’ Smith.

Joe is survived by his wife, Rhonda Fleming Smith; son and son-in-law, Robert Travis ‘Robbie’ Smith and Terry Johnson Jr. of Richmond, VA; sisters and brothers-in-law, Martha and R.E. ‘Buck’ Simms of TX, Joyce Crisco of OK, Lillian Lee and David Loudermilk of OK; brothers and sisters-in-law, James K. Sr. and Beverly Smith of NV, Robert Thomas Smith of OH, and Garland Dean and Billie Guill Smith of VA; brothers-in-law, Barry Wells of VA, and Michael Terry Fleming of AL; 16 nieces and nephews; as well as several great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Joe belonged to Callaway #369 Masonic Lodge in Callaway, FL, the Scottish Rite in Panama City, FL, Shaddai Shrine Temple in Panama City, FL, Sons of Confederate Veterans Stuart’s Horse Artillery Camp 1784 in Floyd, VA, Disabled American Veterans as a life member, as well as AMVETS life member.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 19, 2018, from 5-7 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Memorial Service will be on Thursday, December 20, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with Terry Blevins officiating.
