Frances Brown Smith, 91, of Lindside, WV, passed peacefully on Sunday, October 24, 2021, after a long illness. The eldest of eight, Frances was born April 24, 1930, in Orchard, WV, to the late Filmore and Ada Mae Brown. She spent her early life in Lindside and was the youngest to ever graduate Peterstown High School.

She was employed by Celanese before moving to Virginia and Ohio and retired in Roanoke, VA, from AEP (GO/Accounts Payable) in 1995. An accomplished seamstress, Frances also enjoyed working at Woolco, Piece Goods, and JoAnn Fabric. Friends and family fondly remember her sewing and other talents—including piano, crafting, oil painting, and baking—especially the large trays of cookies. Frances was always proud of her family and felt very blessed to spend her final years in the mountains she loved, surrounded by family, and near her childhood home. She carried her family’s love to her Savior in Eternal Life.

Frances was preceded in death by brothers Don (LaRue), Jack (Winnie), and Bill. Left behind to cherish her memory include son, Jim (Ruth) Smith of Canton, OH; daughter, Debbie (Garland) Slocum of York, SC; grandchildren: Mike and Alexis Smith of Ohio; Brooke and Courtney Slocum of Sweden; great-grandchildren: Skylar, Jordan, and Natalie of Ohio; siblings: Betty (Garland) Ballengee, Bobby (Emma Jean) Brown, Elsie Jo Lilly (Junior, deceased), and Jim (Mary) Brown; sister-in-law, Grace Brown; special nephew, David Brown; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family would also like to thank the staff at Blue Ridge Cancer Center, The Havens at Princeton, and Compassus Hospice for the wonderful care provided to Frances.

A Celebration of Frances’s Life will begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home in Peterstown, WV. The family will begin receiving friends at 10:00 am. A comfort dinner for all who wish to share additional memories will follow at Lindside Christian Church. A private burial at Orchard Cemetery will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either Peterstown EMS or Compassus Hospice in Princeton, WV.
