smith_a_haroldA. Harold Smith, 90, of Blacksburg, died on Monday, June 20, 2011, at his home. He was born in Covington, Va., on October 30, 1920, to the late Daniel Leotis and Pearlie Lee Graves Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys V. (Glad) Smith. He was a longtime member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, having served numerous years on the building committee. Harold began his working career as a water boy for the rock masons at the Mountain Lake Hotel. Later he worked as a carpenter at the Radford Arsenal, before coming a building contractor in Blacksburg for over 50 years. He was also a charter member of the Blacksburg Rescue Squad and a member of the Blacksburg Fire Department since 1939. As an avid hunter he was an honorary member of the Stag Hollow Hunt Club. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Alfred and Linda Smith, of Blacksburg; his grandson, Drew Smith and wife, Michelle, of Blacksburg; granddaughter, Keely ArbenzSmith and husband, Jeff, of Bowie, Md.; great-grandson, Shane Smith; stepgreatgranddaughter, Ashley Jones; his sister, Celia Sprouse, of Clinton, Md.; his brother, Bittle Smith, of Blacksburg; his sister-in-law: Liz Miller, of Blacksburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 24, 2011, in the Blacksburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Reggie Tuck officiating. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. Harold loved flowers, contributions may be made to the Blacksburg Rescue Squad, 200 Progress St., NE, Blacksburg, VA 24060, and the Blacksburg Fire Department, 2700 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg, VA 24060. Friends may call anytime after noon on Thursday, June 23, 2011, and the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr. SW, Blacksburg, Va. logo
