Howard Leslie Slusser, 65, of Blacksburg and Pembroke, Va., died on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at Giles Memorial Hospital. He was born in Christiansburg, Va., on January 27, 1944, to the late Paul Leslie and Mary Elizabeth Caldwell Slusser.

Howard was retired from the United States Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Billie Shannon Slusser, of Pembroke; two daughters and son-in-law, Andrea and Bernie Carbone, and Heidi Elizabeth Brown, all of Rhode Island; a sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine “Deen” and James Chambers, of Hayden, Idaho; nephew, James Couch, of San Antonio, Texas; niece, Leslie Buettner ,of Woodbridge, Va.; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; two aunts, Trudy and husband, Juel Albert, of Long Shop, and Margaret “Maggie” Harris, of Blacksburg; one uncle, John and wife, Jean Slusser, of Blacksburg; long time friend, Douglas Weston; and numerous cousins.

Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Giles County Rescue Squad, 1801 Wenonah Ave., Pearisburg, Va.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday evening, September 7, 2009, at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr., Blacksburg, Va.
