Vurden Jamina “Sissy” Maxey Yates Slusher, 73, of Shawsville, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 4, 2014, with her family by her side. She was born on May 19, 1941, in Montgomery County. Sissy was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert Maxey and Mary Mabry Maxey.

In addition to her parents, Sissy was preceded in death by her brother, Herbert Riley Maxey Jr.; as well as her stepchild, Teresa Slusher; and stepgrandson, Justin Ratcliffe. She is survived by her husband, John Slusher, to whom she was married to for 25 years; daughter, Dedra Argabright (Wilton); son, Michael Maxey; stepchildren, Debbie Lowery (Perry), Connie Ratcliffe (Roger) and Tammy Slusher; special grandson, Lyle Argabright; and grandchildren, Allen, Victoria, Ashley and Kaitlin Maxey. She also had nine stepgrandchildren and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Jean Irby, Wanda Lang (Jimmy), Sandrel Ratcliffe, and Connie Spencer; brothers, James Maxey (Nellie), Roger Maxey (Margarite), Danny Maxey (Pat), Nickey Maxey, Rickey Maxey (Sharon), and Ronnie Maxey; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends all of whom meant very much to her.

Sissy adored her family and was very dedicated to them. She loved to go thrift shopping and buying gifts for her family and friends. She also worked for many years for Medeco Locks, as well as Camp Alta Mons. She was an avid lover of the outdoors and thoroughly enjoyed taking care of her flowers. Sissy loved to play music and to go on trips, especially to Pigeon Forge, Tenn. where many fond memories were made with her family and friends.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Blue Ridge Cancer Centers and Amedisys Hospice Care, especially Cindy and Sarah, for their kindness and care they gave both Sissy and our entire family. It was Sissy’s wish to be at home with her family by her side and we are so grateful the aforementioned made this possible.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2014, in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Gerry Buckner officiating. Interment will follow in Shawsville Congregational Cemetery, Shawsville.
