Edith Akers Sledd went to her eternal home on Sunday evening, May 15th, 2016. Born in Floyd, Va. in 1920 to Loraine Howard Akers and Charles Akers, Edith was the first born of eleven children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved son, Denny Sledd, her husband of sixty years, Otto Dempsey Sledd, brothers, Winston Akers, Frank Akers, Ronnie Akers, Charles Akers, Jr. and one sister, Eileen Patrick.

Left to treasure Edith’s memory are her son, Jack Sledd and wife Kathy jo, grandson, John Sledd and wife Jennifer and great granddaughter, Elena Grace Sledd, granddaughters, Tammy Henderson (Joe), Tracy Tousignant (Joe) and great grandchildren, Donovan Tousignant, Caroline Tousignant, Richard Henderson and Zachary Henderson. Also left with very fond memories are Edith’s sisters, Donna Roberts, Dale Zahn, Sally Tolbert, Bobbie Morrissette (Bill) and brother, Bill Akers (Carol), many nieces and nephews as well as many cherished friends.

Edith grew up in Riner, Va. She graduated from Auburn High school and went on to Bluefield College prior to employment at Leggett’s Dept. store and C & P Telephone Company in Christiansburg, Va. In 1943, she married Dempsey Sledd and became a wife, mother of two boys and a homemaker in Radford, Va. She was a longtime member of Grove Methodist Church, where she devoted time to her circle and the blood mobile. She also worked at the Radford Clothing Bank. Edith always looked forward to her annual family reunion. She played the piano from early childhood and was quite accomplished.

Always in her flower gardens, bird watching, reading her bible, sewing, working crossword puzzles, or reading horoscopes. Edith had a great fondness for cats and was an inspiration to ALL who came in contact with her. She will be missed greatly.

The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 am on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. with Rev. Aaron Pierce officiating. Interment will follow in Sunrise Burial Park in Radford.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ronald McDonald House in Roanoke, VA or to the charity of one’s choice will be appreciated.
