Slate, John White
John White Slate, 78, of Radford, passed away Friday, March 16, 2007 at the Beulah House in Dublin.
He was the son of the late Thomas Washington and Mattie Helton Slate. He was preceded in death by his wife; Maxine Boyd Slate.
John was a retired parts manager for the Parts House in Radford, was a member of Virginia May Masonic Lodge #38 A.F. & A.M. in Radford, was a past member of the New River Valley React, and was a recipient of the Hugo Award.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Dowdy of Ohio; five grandchildren, Jason, Justin, Matthew, Amanda and Nikki; great-grandaughter, Abby; niece, Bonnie Katz of Blacksburg; brother, Rufus Slate of North East, Md.; sister, Annie Hubble of Warner Robbins, Ga.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 19, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford, with Pastor Jerry Gibson and Kenneth Akers officiating, entombment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum where members of Virginia May Masonic Lodge #38 A.F. & A.M. will conduct Masonic graveside rites.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 2224 Jefferson Street, S.E., Roanoke, Va. 24014. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
