Slate, Jerry Wayne (Woody)

Jerry Wayne (Woody) Slate, 62, of Pulaski, Va., passed away Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016. He was born Aug. 8, 1954, in Pulaski, the son of the late C.R. (Rex) Slate and Ida Belle Viars Slate.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Billy Slate; brother-in-law Rodney (Shep) Sheppard; sister-in-law Elizabeth (Libby) Slate; and nieces Carrie Sue Slate and Crystal Smith Evans.

Jerry was retired from Blackstone Paving.

Jerry spent many happy hours with his niece, Kimberly Stone and James Stone, and their two children, Toe Walker and Bam Bam, as well as with his nephew, Josh Slate and fiance Deama Corvin and their children, Dawson and Davin in Conners Valley. He is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Rusty and Sue Slate of Draper, Va., and Chuckie and Monica Slate, David Slate, Steve Slate, and Ricky and Angie Slate, all of Pulaski; sisters and brothers-in-law Gayle Slate Owen of Pulaski, Doris Slate Sheppard of Pulaski, Barbara and Timmy Smith of Dublin, and Becky and Floyd Dehart of Draper; and many nieces and nephews who will always cherish the memories of their Uncle Jerry.

The family expresses its gratitude to Ricky and Angela Slate for being Jerry’s loving caretakers.

Jerry will be cremated and his ashes scattered at a later date on the mountain he loved in Conners Valley in Draper. At that time, there will be a celebration of Jerry’s life.
