Albert Harrell (Skeeter) Simpkins, 84, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2011, at his home in Radford.

He was a member of First Baptist Church and retired from the United States Postal Service with 44 years of service during which time he was the Superintendent of the Kent Street Station in Radford. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Nevada. He was past Commander of VFW Post #776 and American Legion Harvey Howe Carper Post #30. He was a member of the Radford High School, Class of 1944.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas and Ida Mabel Simpkins; stepmother, Becky Ferrell Simpkins; brothers, George and Thomas Simpkins; and sisters, Louise, Betty and JoAnn. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Layne Simpkins, of Radford; half brothers, Ralph Terry Simpkins, of Dublin, and William Ward Simpkins and Robert Lee Simpkins and his wife, Beverly, all of Radford; half sister, Eleanor Sue Speed and her husband, Sonny, of Christiansburg; step sister, Betty Ratcliffe, of Radford; sister-in-law, Jean Blankenship, of Pulaski; brother-in-law, Danny Joe Layne and his wife, Doris, of Wytheville; his extended family, Damon and Rhonda Layne, and daughters Megan, Ashley and Morgan, of Wytheville, and Danette Layne and Chalee Lyons and daughter, Laci Mae, of Roanoke; several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews; and his Georgian family, George Togonidze and wife, Nino, and their children, David Albert and Demetre, of Tibilise, Ga.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 11, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Radford with Dr. Paul Lane and Dr. James Baucom officiating. Graveside Services will be held at 2 p.m. in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Wythe County where members of VFW Post #776 will conduct Military Graveside Rites. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, 2011, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
