Shumate Jr., Joseph Beverly

Joseph Beverly Shumate Jr., 79, of Pulaski, Va., died Wednesday, October 22, 2008. He was born June 6, 1929 in Martinsville, VA, and was the son of the late Margaret Poteet Shumate and Joseph Beverly Shumate, Sr.

Joe was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Korea, was a retired CEO of Coleman Furniture Company, a graduate of Riverside Military Academy in Gainsville, GA, a graduate of Davidson College, and a graduate of the Univeristy of Michigan at An Arbor.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Shumate. He is survived by his beloved companion, Janice U. Craig of Pulaski: a daughter; Susan Abee and her husband John of Kalamazoo, MI: one son; Joseph Beverly Shumate, III of Fort Carson, CO. Also survived by two granddaughters; Clara and Elain Abee, along with several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held MONDAY October 27, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Pulaski, VA. The family will receive friends briefly following the service at the church.
