Michael Braden Shortt, 16, of Pearisburg departed this life January 13, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born December 20, 2004, he was a son of Kevin Shortt and Megan Buchanan.

Michael was preceded in death by his loving great-grandparents Teddy and Pauline Woods, great-grandmother Stella Mae Collins, and aunt Linda Dove. He is survived by his parents, Kevin Shortt and Megan Buchanan, great-grandmother Caroline (Callie) Buchanan, great-grandfather Ray (Mary) Shortt, grandparents Lisa Shortt, Bobby Buchanan, Debbie Bradberry, Paula Woods-Dunagan, and Danny (Denise) Shortt. He is also survived by aunts Christy (Wesley) Mutter, Jennifer (Travis) Cain, Brittany Church, Emily Bradberry, and uncles Jeff Buchanan, Daniel (Jessica) Shortt, Chuck (Sue) Woods, TG Woods, and Tony Woods. Michael was loved and admired by numerous surviving cousins and will be missed by his “girlfriend” Beth Chaffin.

Although his time here was short, his impression was far reaching and everlasting. Michael touched the lives of all he encountered and even some he didn’t. His strength and perseverance were second to none and this made him an inspiration to all. Michael will forever be remembered for his infectious, albeit sometimes sly, smile, his appropriately timed eye rolls, and his love for Live PD and all things NASCAR.

The family would like to express their immense gratitude to Nurse Sandy Hinkley. Nurse Sandy’s love for Michael was evident in her unwavering dedication and care. The family would also like to thank Michael’s teacher, Mr. John Miller, the entire staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital’s PICU, and the neurology clinic at the University of Virginia for their years of care and support.

There will be a time to celebrate the sweet life of Michael in a graveside service on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, VA. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel, Saturday, January 16, 2021 from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM.
