Shockey, Donna Jean Lyons

Donna Jean Lyons Shockey, 63, of Copper Hill, Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 10, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Arlene Lyons, of Jesse, W.Va.; her brothers, Tom and Richard Lyons, of West Virginia; and mother and father-in-law, Francis S. and Margaret Shockey Sr., of Copper Hill.

Donna was born on April 27, 1945, in Pineville, W.Va. She graduated from Oceana High School in Oceana, W.Va., in 1962. Donna was in the United States Army Women’s Army Corp. from 1963 to 1965 where she meet and married her husband, Francis (Butch) S. Shockey Jr. on October 23, 1964. Upon completion of her husband’s military service, Donna settled in Copper Hill with her husband.

Besides being a devoted wife, mother, and “mommaw,” Donna drove a school bus for the county of Floyd for several years, after which she became a full time employee of the United States Postal Service working as a rural letter carrier out of Copper Hill and Bent Mountain Post Offices. After 20 years of dedication to the U.S. Postal Service she enjoyed spending her time caring for her grandchildren.

Donna is survived by her husband of 44 years, Francis (Butch) S. Shockey Jr.; her son, Clinton Shockey and his wife, Patricia, of Vinton, Va.; son, Eric Shockey, of Copper Hill; her daughter, Shannon Rogers and her husband, Jeffrey, of Wirtz, Va.; six grandchildren, Patrick Byrd, Michael Shockey, Samantha Shockey, Ryan Shockey, Hunter Rogers, and Hailee Rogers; her sister, Yvonne Lyons, of West Virginia; her brother, Robert Lyons and his wife, Polly, of West Virginia; her brother, Roby Lyons and his wife, Carol, of Kentucky; her brother-in-law, Harold Shockey and his wife, Loretta, of Copper Hill; her brother-in-law, Gary Shockey and his wife, Judy, of Roanoke; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family visitation will be held on Friday, February 13, 2009, at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Rt. 221, Copper Hill, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2009, at Mount Olivet Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Mills presiding. Burial will be held at Restvale Cemetery immediately following the services. Flowers will be greatly appreciated at Wood Funeral Home in Floyd Va.
