Shelton, Stephen “Johnny”

Stephen Richmond “Johnny” Shelton, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2019, in Pulaski, Virginia. Better known as “Johnny” or “Steve” (based on when and where you met him in life), he was born on March 29, 1946 in Wytheville, Va., to Stephen Clayton Shelton and Margaret (Jessee) Shelton.

Johnny is survived by his wife, Cyndi Shelton, his daughter Margaret Kristen Shelton, both of Draper, Va.; his daughter by his first marriage, Regan Virginia Shelton of Pulaski, Va., his sister Rebecca S. Palmer of Avon Park, Fla.; and his niece and nephew Susan Farmer McKenna and Douglas Clayton Farmer.

Johnny grew up in Pulaski, graduated from Pulaski High School in 1964, and attended Ferrum College. He served in the U.S. Army and was posted in Korea during the Vietnam War. Through the years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his friends Dick Fizer, Danny Anderson, and Wally Overman. He also became a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, and he and his wife bred and showed Quarter Horses locally. Later in life, he became a commercial truck driver and travelled extensively throughout the United States as well as in parts of Canada. He enjoyed discovering new recipes and was a master of the grill.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Matthew Kaatz and his staff, as well as the doctors and nurses at the UNC Medical Center where he received treatment for amyloidosis, and the staff of Pulaski Health and Rehabilitation Center who helped care for him in the final stages of the disease.

The family will hold a private ceremony at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Pulaski Daily Bread, 980-2131, 408 N. Jefferson Ave., or to the charity of one’s choice.
