Sylvia Underwood Shelor, 82, of Blacksburg, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2008. She was born in Blacksburg, Va., to the late James Lee and Mary Susan Underwood.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, James, George and Oscar Underwood, and two sisters, Pauline Barclay and Mae Ferebee.

A loving wife and mother, she leaves behind her husband of 62 1/2 years, Arnold R. Shelor Sr.; three daughters and one son, Nancy Moore (Walter) of Winston-Salem, N.C., Arnold R. Shelor Jr. of Blacksburg, Charlotte McGuire (Kelly) of Gainesville, Ga., and Debrah L. Shelor of Charlottesville, Va.; and two grandsons, Gregory M. Moore of Denver, Colo., and Duncan R. McGuire of Gainesville, Ga. She is also survived by three sisters, Shirley Martin (Jimmy) of Salem, Va., Mary Ruth Webb (Rodney) of Salem, Va., and Diane (Junior) Boothe of Christiansburg, Va.; one brother, Dean Underwood (Jessica) of Blacksburg, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and her special friends at church.

Arnold and the children express their heartfelt gratitude to Diane and Mary Ruth for the constant care they gave Sylvia during her time in the hospital and in the nursing home. They wish to thank special friends, Lois Wade and Brenda Caldwell, for their faithful love and support during Sylvia’s illness. They are also appreciative of the care and concern shown by the staff at Heritage Hall during the past three months, as well as the support of Good Samaritan Hospice during her final days.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2008, in Blacksburg First Wesleyan Church with the Rev. John Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery in Blacksburg.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2008, at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, Blacksburg, Va.
