Shelburne, Jr., Harvey Daniel
Harvey Daniel (Danny) Shelburne, Jr., 58, of Radford, died Tuesday, May 20, 2014 about 2 days after suffering a massive heart attack. Danny’s dad (now 89) and sisters Carolyn and Charlotte were at Danny’s side as he passed away peacefully at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital soon after life support was removed. He was an employee of Radford University where he worked in the Facilities Department.
Danny was born May 16, 1956 at Radford Community Hospital, the son of Harvey Daniel Shelburne Sr., and the late Mary Sawyers Shelburne.
Danny’s happiest years were those many summers (and a few winters too) at the Frost Valley YMCA , Claryville, NY, where he was an Leader in Training, Junior Counselor, horse barn staffer, maintenance guy and Adventure Trip leader. He loved Frost Valley completely. He was full of antics and tricks and pranks, had an infectious devilish loud laugh, but when it was time to get serious and do the work, he was all in – strong as a bull, willing to pull more than his weight, all with a ready smile. In an emergency – he was the fastest to respond. One afternoon when a young staffer was badly injured at the horse barn; the intercom phone at the barn couldn’t reach the nurse right away so Danny jumped on a horse and galloped off like a cowboy to the Health Center shouting “Git the nurse! Git the NURSE!!” – whereupon she was gotten and the young staffer was immediately taken care of.
He was a graduate of Radford High School and received a degree in Business Management from Radford University. He is survived by his father, Harvey Shelburne of Radford; sisters, Carolyn and Charlotte Shelburne, both of Radford; aunt, Edith DeMarco of Baltimore, MD; and cousins, Ronnie Dalton, Robin Wright, Michael Sawyers, Roger Sawyers, Sue Merrill, Mike DeMarco and Bob DeMarco.
Memorial services will be held Friday, May 23, 2014 at 3:00 pm at Grove United Methodist Church in Radford with Rev. Karen Lane officiating. A reception celebrating Danny’s life will follow in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Radford High School Foundation, PO Box 2823, Radford, VA 24143 designated for the Mary Sawyers Shelburne Scholarship Fund or to Frost Valley YMCA, 2000 Frost Valley Road, Claryville, NY 12725, http://frostvalley.org/ways-to-give/.
The Shelburne family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford. www.mullinsfuneralhome.com

Dear Carolyn, Mr. Shelburne and Charlotte,
I was so very sad to hear about Danny.
When I think about Danny I remember him in corduroy pants walking down the halls of Radford High School. We were in 8th grade when the school burned down, so the last class to have had the honor to walk those halls. I always had a little crush on Danny and I like to think he had one on me. But for the fact that he looked too much like my brother and I too much like his sisters……….who knows.
Your service was lovely and I was fortunate to meet his co-workers. I am glad to know his sense of humor and general love of life remained intact.
I will be thinking of you all.
Ann
