Shelburne, Catherine Wood

Catherine Ball Wood Shelburne, 92, of Charlottesville, VA, died on Thursday, December 27, 2007. Born August 6, 1915 in Pulaski, VA, she was the daughter of the late D. Robertson Wood and Gertrude Christian Howard Wood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Pettus Shelburne, Jr. and her brother, Dexter Robley Wood.

After graduating from Randolph-Macon Woman?s College, Catherine taught English at Virginia Intermont College and later was active in the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic Society and the Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania chapter of Planned Parenthood.

Catherine is remembered by her family and friends as a devoted and loving sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, philanthropist and the family story-teller.

Surviving her are a sister, Virginia Howard Wood McMurray; a daughter, Catherine Shelburne English; a son, Thomas Pettus Shelburne, III; four grandchildren, Sally Shelburne Newhall, Thomas Pettus Shelburne, IV, John Alden English, and Catherine Talley English Tillack; and six great-grandchildren.

Private memorial services are planned in Greenwood, VA and at Liberty Christian Church in Green Bay, VA.
