Barbara Davis Shaver, 78, of Johnson City, Tenn., and formerly of Blacksburg, passed away September 1, 2014 after a prolonged illness.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Thomas L. Shaver, and their only child son Thomas (Brad) Shaver. She also is preceded in death by her parents W. Penn and Virginia (Craig) Davis, and special brother-in-law, Ken McPherson.

Mrs. Shaver worked as a volunteer in the Emergency Room at the Old North Side Hospital in Johnson City, Tenn., for a number of years. In earlier days she was employed at the old C&P Telephone Company, Roanoke, Va., and at the Virginia Tech Switchboard while her husband was in college. Barbara spent many hours at ball card shops as their son was growing up, helping him with his card collection which he loved.

Survivors are sisters, Lois D. McPherson, of Fort Mill, S.C., and Judy Kitts and husband Mack, of Chesapeake, Va.; special nephew, Gary McPherson and wife Donna, of Charlotte, N.C.; and also many other nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to friend of the family Gary Roberts for all of his help and kindness.

Mrs. Shaver will be missed by “Checker” the Rabbit and her little (Pekingese) “Benji”.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Graveside Services will conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2014 in the Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg with the Rev. Greg Kitts officiating. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg, Va., 540-552-3211.
