Sharpe, Joe Henderson

amem_lighthouse.jpgJoe Henderson Sharpe, 78, of Hoge St. in Pembroke, departed this life Wednesday evening, February 20, 2008, at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg after a brief battle with cancer.

Born in Ivanhoe in Wythe County on March 1, 1929, he was a son of the late Earl. C. Sharpe Sr. and Annie Smith Sharpe. Joe was a veteran of the United States Army, Korean War Era, a retired Celanese Celco Plant employee, the senior volunteer at Celco Federal Credit Union, and enjoyed golfing and outdoor activities both in Virginia and Florida.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Jr. and John David Sharpe. He leaves to cherish and love his memory his wife of 57 years, Charlene Amelong Sharpe; his children and their spouses, Emily and Tom Johnston, of Richmond, Va., Glenn and Vickie Sharpe, of Bonnyman, Ky., Annette and Scott Widrig, of Pembroke, and Hobe Sound, of Florida; grandchildren, Jennifer Barnett, Crystal and Daryn Pigmann, of Bonnyman, Ky., Joseph Widreg, of Pembroke, and Hobe Sound, Florida; great-grandchildren, Dawson and Emma; a brother, Sam Sharpe, of Roanoke; sisters, Pauline Dehart, of Peterstown, W.Va., Aline Conn, of Powhatan, Nancy Williams, of Pearisburg, and Mildred Ward, of Greensboro, N.C.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 23, 2008, in The Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke with burial in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. There will be no graveside services.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening, February 22, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Giles County Relay For Life Team, American Cancer Society, 215 Bowens Road, Pembroke, Va. 24136.
