John George Self, 90, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, April 23, 2011. Mr. Self was a World War II Veteran serving in the United States Navy. He retired from RAAP in Radford, then worked many years for Montgomery County Recycling. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The son of the late Lee and Lettie Self, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Emma Self. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Joyce and James Martin, Johnnie and Donna Self, Quinton “Spotsie” and Barbara Self, all of Christiansburg, Rena and Michael Turpin, of Fairlawn, and Debbie and Roger Johnston, of Christiansburg, 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Florence “Sis” Clark, of Strasburg; sisters-in-law, Margaret Self, of Lebanon Church, and Bea Hamblin, of Princeton, W.Va. Also surviving are his many cousins, nieces, nephews and his special companion, “his dog” Lady.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2011, at the Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2011, from the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Mark Peterson and Bishop Jon Passic. Interment will follow in Belmont Cemetery, Christiansburg.
