Joseph Henry Scott, of Blacksburg, Va., passed away on Friday, November 12, 2010, at Montgomery Regional Hospital, Blacksburg, Va. Joe was born on March 15, 1922, in Williamson, W.Va., and graduated from Huntington High School, Huntington, W.Va. Joe enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in World War II, serving in the Pacific.

In 1947, Joe married Ellen Boone Buchanan, of Machipongo, Va., settling in Northern Virginia. Joe graduated from Strayer College in Washington, D.C., and worked for the U.S. Public Health Service, Washington, D.C., and retired from the U.S. Government in the 1970s. Upon retirement, Joe and Ellen Boone settled in Rehoboth Beach, Del., until moving to Blacksburg in 1989. Joe was an avid golfer until his health would not allow him to play anymore. He loved the University of Virginia, which he attended for a period of time, and followed their athletic teams closely for most of his adult life. Joe’s wife of 59 years, Ellen Boone, or affectionately known as Boonie, passed away in Blacksburg in 2006.

Joe is survived by his son, Joseph H. Scott Jr. and his wife, Jeanne, of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; and son, Frederick A. Scott and his wife, Liz, of Oak Park, Calif. In addition, he is survived by granddaughter, Kimberly Balow, of Bethesda, Md.; granddaughter, Becky Nosal, of Alexandria, Va.; grandson and granddaughter, Matthew Scott and Ashley Scott, both of Oak Park, Calif.; greatgrandson, Jackson Bahumian; great-granddaughter, Raylee Balow; brother, William H. Scott, of Vero Beach, Fla.; and sister, Alice Hale, of Blacksburg, Va.

A service celebrating Joe’s life will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, November 22, 2010, at the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, 111 Church Street, SE, Blacksburg, Va. 24060, (540) 552-5424.
