Dr. Wilbur (Bill) Peter Schwobel, 89, a resident of the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, died Sunday, March 26, 2006, at Oak Lea after a brief illness.

A son of the late Peter Schwobel and Wilhelmina Ludwig Schwobel, he was born September 27, 1916, in Ridgewood, N.Y.

Dr. Schwobel graduated from Cornell Veterinary College. He practiced Veterinary medicine in Summerville, N.J. for three and a half years before coming to Harrisonburg where he was in practice for forty-one years.

Dr. Schwobel was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, the American Veterinary Association, Virginia Veterinary Medical Association, Blue Ridge Veterinary Medical Association, the Elks Lodge #450, Izzck Walton League of America, Harrisonburg Kiwanis Club and Gideons since 1990.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie T. Schwobel. He is survived by two sons, Donald Peter Schwobel, Madison, Va., Paul Clifford Schwobel, Riverdale, Md.; one daughter, Carol Ann Schwobel, Blacksburg, Va.; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Whitener, Rocky Mount, N.C., Nancy Logan, Houston, Texas; one sister, Ruth Morse, West Melbourne, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held two o’clock Saturday afternoon, April 1, 2006 in Strite Auditorium at Crestwood, Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideons of Virginia PO Box 734, Harrisonburg, Va. 22803, or to the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community Compassion Fund. The Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
