March 14, 1971 July 1, 2011 “Light and Love!” Polly A. Schwandt-Zeiger, 40, of Blacksburg, was taken into the everlasting arms of the Lord early Friday morning, July 1, 2011. She battled breast cancer for three years before her death. She was born on March 14th in Milwaukee, Wis., daughter of the late Warren and Judith Schwandt nee Pfrang. On the 19th of June, 1993, Polly married Matthew D. Zeiger at St. John’s Lutheran Church in West Bend, Wisconsin. Polly and Matthew have made their home in Blacksburg since 1994 and have attended Luther Memorial Lutheran Church since that time. Polly is survived by her husband Matthew; her three beloved children, Kelby, Tristan and Adeline; brother, Benjamin (Erika) Schwandt, of Oconomowoc, Wis., and their children, Brodie and Keegan; and brother-in-law, Nathan (Heather) Zeiger, of Milwaukee, Wis., and their son, Gabriel. She is further survived by Jerome and Rozanne Zeiger, of West Bend, Wis., parents of Matthew; her aunt, Joanne (Andrew) Rogers and uncle, Kenneth Mohs, of Plymouth, Wis.; as well as other dear relatives and friends. Polly graduated from West Bend East High School in 1989, earned a bachelor’s degree in teaching in 1994 from Concordia College in Mequon, Wis., and a master’s degree in math education in 2007 from Virginia Tech. Polly’s main focus outside of her family was her teaching career, from which she drew great satisfaction. She began her career in 1994 as a teacher’s aide and classroom teacher at Gilbert Linkous Elementary in Blacksburg and was most recently a gifted resource teacher at Christiansburg Primary and Christiansburg Elementary. Polly enjoyed reading, attending her children’s athletic events, watching movies, baking, and collecting handbags. She was a past president of the Luther Memorial Church Council and served on the Christian Education Committee. Polly will be remembered by family, friends, colleagues and students for her generosity, loving nature, gentle spirit and willingness to help. Polly’s motto was “Light and Love!” and she was certainly an intense source of both for all who knew her. Visitation with Polly’s family will take place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, and also from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at the Phillips Funeral Home in West Bend, Wis. The Memorial Service for Polly will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church (located at the corner of Toms Creek and Prices Fork Road in Blacksburg).
