Alvene Marie Schreiner Scholtes, 95, of Blacksburg passed away peacefully at her home on June 23, 2015. She was born on September 8, 1919 in Brooklyn, NY to the late John A. and Elizabeth R. Schreiner.

Alvene was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Harold F. Scholtes, her sister and brother-in-law Marion E. and Ellis M. Peterson, and her nephew John E. Peterson.

As a mother of two she was very active in their activities and her community. She was a member of the Ketler Elementary School PTA in Westwood, NJ and was its president for several years. She was also an active member of Westwood United Methodist Church and served several years as president of the church Women’s Group. She was her husband’s best friend, and after he retired, she enjoyed traveling, golfing, sailing, playing bridge, and sewing sails for his model sailboats that he made. Alvene was a charter member and officer of The Ladies of the Elks, Lodge # 2602, Lehigh Acres, Florida, and enjoyed helping with the many Elk activities. She was a member of Eastern Star, Lehigh Acres United Methodist Church, and the local Hobby Club.

Alvene is survived by her son, Wayne H. Scholtes (Linda) of Spartanburg, SC and her daughter, Faye E. Myers of Blacksburg, Va; grandchildren Elizabeth Hager, Sally Cooke (Nathan), Karen Vessell (Jeff), Laura Bell (Eric), Thomas Myers and Susan Myers. “Ga-Ga” was very proud of her great-grandchildren: Alaina and Allison Brauns, Tyler and Landon Vessell, Caroline and Susannah Edwards, Gabriel Bell and his soon-to-be-born sister Catherine Grace, and Hannah, William, and Georgia Cooke; and dear friends Ann and Merle Cummings.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers friends and family may make a donation to a favorite charity in her memory.
