Schmidt, B. June
Dr B. June Schmidt, 89, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2022, after suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Surviving is her husband of 65 years, Dr. Richard E. Schmidt; daughter, Amy, her husband, Ed, and grandson, Erich; son, Stephen, his wife, Amanda, granddaughter, Elizabeth, and grandson, Andrew.
June earned her bachelor’s from the University of Pittsburgh, with postgraduate work completed at Virginia Tech earning both a masters and Ph.D. in Education. She taught business at Christiansburg High school and served as an administrator for Virginia Department of Education. A Professor Emeritus of Human Resources and Education of Virginia Tech faculty, her teaching and research initiated numerous awards from professional organizations such as Delta Phi Epsilon and Omicron Tau Theta. As part of building rewarding student relationships, her graduate students nominated her, and she became a recipient of the prestigious John Robert Gregg Award for Business Education.
As a result of her excellence in teaching and research, Dr. Schmidt was in demand as a speaker and consultant, working with colleagues both nationally and internationally to include Finland, Germany, Guam, and Alaska. She also was engaged with community projects to include the Woman’s League of Voters and served as president of the local AARP chapter. She relished frequent travel around the world with her husband, playing golf in far off places such as Spain’s Costa del Sol. She met her husband square dancing and enjoyed playing bridge.
Arrangements include Mass at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, Blacksburg, Virginia, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2022, followed by interment at the Memorial Gardens of the New River Valley, and a Celebration of Life lunch at the Blacksburg Country Club. I am sorry to hear of June Schmidt’s death. As former public relations manager for the College of Education, I admired June’s leadership skills and community involvement. She was such a role model for many.
