Schlager, Janice Marie

Janice Marie Schlager, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at the Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg, VA. Born May 23, 1938, in Glen Rogers, WV, she was the daughter of the late Robert “Bob” Hughes and Pauline Acord Hughes Kessler. Janice was of the Baptist Faith. She was a loving mother and grandmother who devoted her life to her family. She was the ultimate homemaker, as she always had plenty of food and hospitality for anyone who happened to stop by. Her love for her family and friends was boundless, and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred S. Schlager, Jr.; her son, Frederick D. “Freddie” Schlager; infant twins; and one brother, Sammy Hughes. Survivors include four daughters, Deborah Lafferty and husband Delmar of Beckley, WV, Pamela Shrewsbury and Husband Phillip “Phil” of Peterstown, WV, Shirley Milam and husband James “Jim” of Bluefield, WV, and Lisa Brown and husband Jerry of Cashmere, WV; two brothers, Gerald “Jerry” Hughes and wife Sharon of Laurel, DE, and Kenny Hughes and wife Henrietta “Chuckie” of Daytona Beach, FL; one sister, Margaret Rabinowitz of Ocean City, MD; nine grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, WV, with Pastor James Milam officiating. Burial will follow at Peterstown, WV, in Rich Creek, VA. Bradley Lafferty, Matthew Trump, Phillip Shrewsbury II, Aaron Milam, Dylan Brown, Ryker Young, and Jason Dowdy will serve as pallbearers.
