Marie Epperly Scaggs, 83, of Christiansburg, Va., passed away at her home on Thursday, October 21, 2010. She was born in Christiansburg, Va., on July 16, 1927. She was an extraordinary wife, a loving mother, a sister’s best friend, a caring daughter, a compassionate nurse, an impeccable seamstress, an outstanding cook, an artistic wedding cake baker, a skillful carpenter, a faithful Girl Scout leader, a perfectionist painter and a master gardener. She stayed at home with her children until they were in high school, when she was accepted as a student in the first nursing program at New River Vocational Technical School at Radford Community Hospital, graduating in October, 1968. She then dedicated her career of 23 years to taking care of her patients like no other nurse. Some of Marie’s special moments in life were ballroom dancing lessons with Emory, winters in Florida after their retirements, beach trips with her family, cooking holiday dinners for her extended family and planting flowers in her yard. Marie served as Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Christiansburg in 1968 alongside her husband as Worthy Patron. She was a faithful member of Main Street Baptist Church for over 50 years, until her stroke in 2002, serving as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, secretary for the youth department, WMU, traveling on mission trips and used her sewing talents from the Lord to make many beautiful banners for the banner ministry. She was preceded in death by her best friend and faithful husband, Charles Emory Scaggs, on January 26, 2010; her parents, George Leonard Epperly and Essie Bishop Epperly; and brothers, the Rev. Allen V. Epperly, Leon Epperly Sr. and Troy Epperly. She is survived by her daughter, Connie Scaggs, of Salem, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Vickie Scaggs, of Midlothian, Va.; grandsons, Ashby Tyson Scaggs, of Portland, Ore., and Nathaniel Atwell Scaggs, of Richmond, Va.; sister, Evelyn Richardson, of Christiansburg, Va.; a sister-in-law, Nora Epperly, of Salem, Va.; three nephews; five great-nephews; and a great-great-nephew and niece. A Funeral Service will be held 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 24, 2010, at Horne Funeral Home with the Rev. Todd Millsaps officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 24, 2010, at Horne Funeral Home prior to the service. A graveside service will be held afterwards in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Marie had a passion for flowers, but also had a passion for helping others. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christiansburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 176, Christiansburg, Va. 24068 or Carilion Hospice of the NRV, 707 Randolph Street, Suite 251, Radford, Va. 24141. The Scaggs family is being served by Horne Funeral Service.
