Sayers, Iris Webb

Iris Webb Sayers left this life on Saturday, February 12, 2011, at New River Valley Medical Center. She had lived in Radford, Va., since 1943. She was a member of First Christian Church since 1950, where she attended regularly and celebrated her faith and love of God by teaching Sunday School, serving on the diaconate, and many other roles and responsibilities of the church. She retired from Hercules in 1989 and previously worked at Lynchburg Foundry in the payroll and accounting department for 14 years and in the Radford City Treasurers office for over nine years. She also served a short time on Radford City Council. She was a member of Radford BPW for 37 years, having served as president and in other capacities. She served as president of Kuhn Barnett PTA (1955 to 1956) and as secretary of McHarg PTA (1964) and was a member of National AARP since 1967 and an active member of the local AARP. She served as scout leader/den mother and was instrumental in the beginning of the scout program at Kuhn Barnett School and in the organization of the Sunset Village Woman’s Club in which she held several offices. She attended elementary school in Allisonia, was a 1942 graduate of Draper High School and attended NRCC and Radford College. She was preceded in death by her parents, Toney and Dora Webb, of Allisonia; a sister, Hattie Dowdy, of Matthews, N.C.; and brothers, Ray Webb, of Jacksonville, Fla., Dickie Webb, of Allisonia, and Dailey Webb, of Snowville. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Herbert Daniel “Dan” Sayers Sr.; two sons, Dr. Herbert Daniel “Bucky” Sayers Jr., of Houston, Texas, and his wife, Barbara, and Gary Michael Sayers, of Claytor Lake, and his fiancée, Kathy Waddell; one daughter, Judy Renee Campbell, of Manassas, and her husband, Gary; six grandchildren, Denice Burch, Bert Sayers, Shannon Sayers, Michael Sayers, Zachary Campbell and Magun Campbell; four great-grandsons, Peyton Sayers, Bryton Sayers, Davis Burch and Thomas Burch; and two great-granddaughters, Kate Burch and Trinity Campbell. Also surviving her is a sister, Margaret Quesenberry, of Martinsville; a brother, Hugh Webb and wife, Naomi, of Max Meadows; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at the First Christian Church in Radford with the Rev. Gina Rhea officiating. Interment will follow in the Webb Family Cemetery in Allisonia. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, February 15, 2011, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Christian Church, 400 Tyler Ave., Radford, Va. 24141 to establish a welcoming, information and advertising center for the church.
