James Arnold Sartin, 79, of Christiansburg, Va., departed this life on Saturday morning, August 28, 2010, at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Radford. He was born on August 25, 1931, at Eggleston, Va., a son of the late James H. and Gertie Vaught Sartin.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Marvin P. Sartin and an infant Aaron Hugh Sartin; and brothers-in-law, Layman H. Hutchison and Gene A. Tracy. He was a member of Faith Tabernacle at Christiansburg, loved motorcycle riding which was his favorite pastime, worked as a heavy equipment operator in stone quarries, and was a veteran of the United States Army, Korean Conflict where he was sergeant over the motor pool.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 53 years, Charlotte Morris Sartin; his sons, Cleatis Sartin, of Christiansburg, and Jamie E. Sartin and wife, Tammy, of Christiansburg; his daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and William Jr. Tawney, of Christiansburg, Rhonda and Darrell Jones, of Christiansburg, Lisa and Carlos Akers, of Christiansburg, Barbara Thompson, of Dublin, and Amanda and Darrell Conner, of Christiansburg; 17 grandchildren; 22 greatgrandchildren; his brother, Carroll and wife, Gladys Sartin, of Shenandoah, Texas; his sisters, Fleda S. Hutchison, of Narrows, Marie S. Roberts, of Pearisburg, Janice S. Tracy, of Rocky Mount, and Evelyn and Eugene Evans, of Staffordsville; his sister-in-law, Glenna Sartin, of Eggleston; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1, 2010, in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke with Pastor Dale Ketch officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, August 31, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff and the doctors at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center for their skilled and kind care of James during his illness.
