Ryplansky, Anatol
Dr. Anatol Ryplansky, 86, of Newbern, passed away Sunday May 6, 2007 at his residence.
He was born in Boratyn, Ukraine on August 15, 1920. He studied at boarding school in Lemberg, Poland and continued his education at the University in Lemberg. He left Ukraine during World War II to escape Russian oppression of his beloved homeland.
He met his wife, Marianne, in Germany and in 1949, received the degree of Medical Doctor, cum laude, from Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany. On graduation, he traveled to Venezuela with his wife and son to specialize in tropical sicknesses among indigenous Indians in San Fernando de Atabapo, Amazonas Territory, Venezuela for five years.
In 1955 he moved to Toronto, Canada where he interned at St. Mary’s Hospital. The following year, he immigrated to Rochester, New York to specialize in radiology. In 1959 he was certified as Associate Resident and Chief Resident in Radiology by the University of Rochester School of Medicine and received the Silver Medal of Achievement from the American Roentgen Ray Society for his research in cancer from radiation to transplanted skin.
From 1959 to 1961, Dr. Ryplansky practiced radiology at Richmond Memorial Hospital. He was certified by the American Board of Radiology in 1960 and elected as a member of the American College of Radiology in 1962. In 1961, he moved to Radford, where he served as an active staff physician at Radford Community Hospital until 1984, including one year as President of the Medical Staff. Although he lived in many countries and spoke seven languages, he preferred the tranquility of Claytor Lake.
Dr. Ryplansky is survived by his wife, Marianne Ryplansky; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Karen Ryplansky; and a daughter, Cristina Ryplansky. A private memorial service is planned.
