Mildred I. Russell, 97, of Meadows of Dan, Va., and formerly of Hampton, died Monday Aug. 24, 2009. She was born in 1912 in Schenectady, N.Y., but grew up in State College, Pa., which she called home. In 1934 she graduated from Pennsylvania State University, from which she received her degree in Home Economics and Institutional Food Service.

“Mid” married Eugene M. Russell in 1939 and they moved to Hampton in 1952, where they were proprietors of Gene Russell, Florist. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and active in the Women’s Club of Hampton and its Club Chorus. In 1993, Mid moved to Meadows of Dan and became active in the Slate Mountain Church, the Willis Homemakers Club, and other community activities.

She is survived by her son, Jack Russell and his wife, Lee Chichester of Meadows of Dan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
