Hubert Burns Russell, 85, of the Wolf Creek Community of Narrows, went to his Heavenly home on Saturday, October 21, 2006.

He was born in Princeton, West Virginia on June 19, 1921 and was the son of the late Millard and Gussie French Russell. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Russell. Mr. Russell was a retired employee of Celanese Acetate in Narrows with 20 years service.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Vernie Shrader Russell; two stepsons and their wives, Dick and Mary Hayes of Heath, Ohio, and Joe and Dorothy Hayes of Roanoke; seven stepgrandchildren, Lisa Hayes of Chicago, Illinois, Rick Hayes of Houston, Texas, Angie Ryan and husband, Andy, of Newark, Ohio, Anita Caldwell of Heath, Ohio, Randy Hayes and wife, Sonia, Melinda Hayes, and Julie Griffith and husband, John, all of Roanoke. He is also survived by a sister, Mary E. (Lorraine) Wolf of Narrows; five stepgreat-grandchildren, Tyler Wells, Will Caldwell, Max Hayes, Sarah Hayes, and Tessa Griffith; a sister-in-law, Janie Body; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their love and appreciation for the many friends who were so kind and generous to Hubert in his illness for the past five years. They include Doug and Barbara Harless, Betty Pillow, Leliah Pruett, Mary Belcher, Debbie Black, Vergie Bailey, Ellis Mae Lambert, Donna Burton, Chester and Jodie Neal, Richard and Emily Lambert, the late Jackie Coburn, and most especially Richard Blankenship.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows with Donny Bailey and Ralph Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Shrader Cemetery in the Niday section of the Wolf Creek Community in Bland County.
