Freeda Harris Rorrer, 66, passed away in the early morning of January 11, 2009, at her home in Floyd, Va.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, she is survived by her husband of 45 years, L. Calvin Rorrer Jr.; and their children, Lee Rorrer Holifield with her husband, Michael C. Holifield, and daughter, Victoria Danielle, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Leonard C. Rorrer III with his wife, Rebecca L. Rorrer, and children, Lyla Marie and Jacob Calvin, of Gainesville, Fla. Freeda is also survived by her sister, Charlotte Harris Dobson with her husband, Steven Dobson, and children, Matthew and Elizabeth, of Maysville, Ky. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grace DeHart Harris and Homer Lee Harris; and her sisters, Ida Burnette and Ada Agee.

Freeda attended Radford College, earning a B.S. in 1964 and an M.S. in 1968. She retired from Floyd County High School in 1998, where she taught math and biology and was a guidance counselor. In her more than 33 years at the school she helped shape the futures of countless students. In retirement she remained busy in the community as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Floyd Women’s Club, and the Presbyterian Women’s Club at the Floyd Presbyterian Church. Her family and many friends will miss Freeda’s caring presence but will always remember her loving spirit, pride of family and selfless dedication to others. Living in the hearts of her loved ones, she is not truly gone.

Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd. Funeral services, Pastor David Taylor officiating, will occur the following morning, 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2009, also at the Gardner Funeral Home, with internment thereafter at the Jacksonville Cemetery.
