John William Robertson, Sr., 87, of Floyd, passed away Monday, June 4, 2007. He was born in Lawsonville, North Carolina to the late Walter and Virgie Spencer Robertson.
He attended Little River Baptist Church. He was known for his love of God, family, gardening, birds and making cakes. He retired from Bassett Furniture Industries. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James and Sam Robertson; and a sister, Magdalene Tilley Compton. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Nellie Thomas Robertson; three children and spouses, John, Jr. and Wanda Robertson of Pilot, Anita Jean Robertson of Stuart, and Joe and Linda Robertson of Floyd; granddaughter and spouse, Alicia and Doug Tiller of Stuart; five sisters, Erna Jenkins of Greensboro, N.C., Doris Kime of Climax, N.C., Rachel Phillips of East Montpelier, Vt., Deanne Dixon of Winston-Salem, N.C., Opal Mabe of Asheboro, N.C.; special friends, Bob and Rosie Bishop of Bassett, and Garfield Radford of Floyd.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2007 at Gardner Funeral Home with the Rev. Allan Vass officiating. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Gardner Funeral Home, where the family will be from 6 until 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
