Madlyn P. Roberts, of Blacksburg, died on February 27, 2012, at Showalter Center following a short illness. Born in Montpelier, Vt. on August 19, 1922, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Charles F. Roberts; her dear twin sister, Margie P. Estes; and her little sister, Bernadette (Snookie) Pembroke.

Mrs. Roberts was a graduate of Vermont Junior College and attended Union College, Kentucky, and Mary Washington College, Virginia. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, who found great joy in creating a warm, comfortable home for her family. She loved the outdoors and all animals; faithfully feeding wild birds, and always an easy mark for any stray cat or dog. She loved the sweet smell of sun-dried laundry and the view from her clothesline looking west to the mountains. Mrs. Roberts looked forward all winter to her “paradise on earth”: her summer home on Lake Champlain, Vt.

She is survived by her brother, James L. Pembroke (Paule), of Burlington, Vt.; four children, James P. Roberts (Nancy), of Counce, Tenn., Kimberly R. Lionarons (Kevin), of Paducah, Ky., Carolyn R. Wall (Rick), of Blacksburg, and Charles F. Roberts II, of Fairfax; two grandchildren, Frenda H. Wall and Nathan F. Wall, of Blacksburg; and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Showalter Center for their compassionate care and dedication to Mrs. Roberts and their faithful support of the family. They also appreciate the tender care given Mrs. Roberts by her caretaker, Monica Smith.

The family will be honoring Madlyn’s request for no visitation and a private graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Montgomery County Humane Society, P.O. Box 287, Blacksburg, VA 24063. Arrangements made by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
