Robert Eugene Morris,

On Monday July 2, 2012 Robert Eugene Morris, affectionately known to all as “Geneboy” was called home by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He left this earth peacefully and joined his beloved wife in our Father’s Mansion. Born May 17, 1921, in the town of Narrows, he was the youngest son of Charlie and Elsie Morris. He attended Narrows High School where he played basketball. After high school he worked at the Celanese plant in Narrows in the spinning department. When World War II broke out he was called to arms, and served honorably in the United States Army in the European Theatre, hitting Omaha Beach D-Day plus three. He fought throughout Western Europe being wounded twice and earning the Bronze Star for courage under fire and the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. Following the war, he returned to Narrows, where he raised his family. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and a true American hero. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows, where he served as a deacon for many years. He is survived by his daughter, Carol Morris Cranwell, of Roanoke; and his son, Jerry Wayne Morris, of Apollo Beach, Fla.; his five grandchildren, Rich, Whitney, Bobby, Jarrett, and Lynn; as well as three great-grandchildren, Devin, Caris and Baela. He was loved and adored by many, and will be missed. Special thanks go out to all those at the Salem Veterans Hospital who cared for Geneboy. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2012, at the First Christian Church, 605 Memorial Boulevard in Narrows. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by VFW Post #6000 of Narrows, American Legion Posts #68 of Narrows, #311 of Pembroke and #145 of Peterstown.
