Riggins, Nellie Donithan

Nellie Donithan Riggins, 79, of 137 Gatewood Ave Danville, VA died on Monday, September 8, 2014 at Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for the past seven years due to Alzheimers.

Mrs. Riggins was born in Pulaski, VA on July 18, 1935 a daughter of the late Gaines Donithan and Lizzie Carpenter. She spent the last thirty seven years in the Danville area, where she was a certified nursing assistant. She was a life member of the Salvation Army where she started the soup kitchen to help feed the hungry. She will be known for being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

On May 24, 1952 she married William Clyde Riggins, Sr. who survives of the residence.

In addition to her husband she is survived by daughter, Cindi Haywood and husband Chip of Bowie, MD, sons, Randy Riggins and wife Nina of Axton, VA, William Clyde Riggins, Jr. and wife Helen of Orlando, FL, and John Riggins and wife Susan, of Ruffin, NC and daughter Hope Harper and husband Rodney of Danville, VA; twelve grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son Kelly Michael Riggins.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at the Salvation Army with Lieutenant Colonel Doris Fizer Chapman officiating. Interment will follow the service in Draper Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Pulaski, VA.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and at other times the family will be at the residence of her son, John and Susan Riggins at 236 Oak Lane, Ruffin NC 27326.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
