richardson oakley johnAs the sun was setting on Palm Sunday, April 1, 2012, Oakley John (O.J.) Richardson, left his home in Dublin, surrounded by his family, for his eternal home in heaven. O.J. was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend to many. He was born on October 31, 1927, to Oakley John and Mildred Richardson. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Glennis Scaggs Richardson; and four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Wilson, Sandra Brunner, Kathy and Doug Bunn, and Marsha and Kenneth (Butch) Pack, all of Dublin. His surviving grandchildren and their families are Jared and Jessica Brunner and children, Hanna and Gary Reese, of Buchanan; Stephanie Hill and son, Tyler, of Dayton, Ohio, and Katie, of Christiansburg; Kim Brunner of Louisville, Ky.; Brandon Bunn and children, Logan, Emily and Wyatt Oakley, of Dublin; Kristi Pack, of Radford and daughter, Kelsi, of Dublin; and a very dear foster grandchild, Maison Brunno, of Dublin and his foster grandson, Jacob Barricks, of Fort Drum, N.Y. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Larry and Margaret Richardson, of Richmond, Ind, Billy and Mary Jane Richardson, of Riner; Mrs. Judy R. Clingenpeel, of Boones Mill, and Janet R. and Richard Shelburne, of Christiansburg. Special friends, Bob and Sharon Priest of Christiansburg; honorary granddaughter, Brooke Priest, of Liberty University, and Donnie and Sherry Sutphin, of Dublin also survive. O.J. was a very special uncle to numerous nieces and nephews and was an honorary grandpa to many children. He served in the United States Army, and retired from Burlington Industries as a truck driver for 35 years and an additional 5 years with Hedge Trucking. He was a founding member of the Grace Brethren Church in Riner, and later became a member of the Highland Park Community Church in Dublin. O.J. enjoyed trains, farming, his John Deere tractors, gospel and bluegrass music, western movies, his special dog, Bear, and most of all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His love for the family showed in everything he did. A Funeral Service celebrating his life will be Thursday, April 5, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Highland Park Community Church in Dublin, with Pastor Mike Blouse officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg. The family expresses appreciation to the doctors and nurses at Carilion NRV Medical Center, Progressive Care Unit, for the wonderful love and care extended to O.J. during his stay in the hospital. Also a heartfelt thank you to Sophia and April with Good Samaritan Hospice for their love and compassion.
