Rice, Mason William

Mason William Rice, 90, of Dublin and formerly of Pearisburg, departed this life Thursday morning, August 10, 2017 at Lewis-Gale Pulaski Hospital in Pulaski, Va. Born in Clendennin, Giles County, on July 4, 1927, he was a son of the late Henry Cecil Rice and Nellie Janney Rice and step-son of Bertha Lawson Rice. He was a veteran of the United States Army, retired from the Celanese Plant at Narrows with 47 years service and a member of New Life Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Christiansburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betsy Ross Austin Rice; his son Tony Rice; his brothers Manuel Rice, Watha Rice, Dauford Rice, Frank Rice; and sisters Thelma Austin, Louise Ratcliffe, Alice Stuart, Eula Noble, Lois Blankenship, Wanda Hale, Cleo Tate, Ethel Tickle Burkholder. He leaves to cherish his memory his son William Arthur Rice of the home; his daughters Loretta Rice of the home and Gloria R and husband David Martin of Durham, N.C.; his grandchildren Melissa Albert, Jonathan Spence, Lena Deskins, Amy Beebe, Curtis Rice, David Rice, Ronnie Rice, and Lisa Ferrell; his great-grandchildren Ember Spence, Quintin Spence, Nicholas Albert, Gregory Albert, Zachary Albert, Ellison Deskins, Abigail Deskins, Cassie Beebe, Carsen Beebe; his brothers Paul Rice, H C Rice, Mark Rice; and his sister Reba Smith, and Sharon Carbaugh. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 1 p.m. in the New Life Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Christiansburg with Pastor Leroy T Peters officiating. Burial will follow in the McClaugherty Cemetery at Clendennin in Narrows. The family will receive friends at the church two hours before the service. Military Graveside Honors will be rendered by local VFW and American Legion posts. T he Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke is in charge of the arrangements.
