Mrs. Jean Rhudy passed away on December 20, 2009, in Charlotte, N.C., after an extended illness. A 25 year resident of Southport, N.C., Jean is preceded in death by her husband, John H. Rhudy (Jack).

Jean was born on September 1, 1923, as the oldest child of Joseph Thurman and Edna Thompson Graham. She and her husband were both raised in Christiansburg, Va., where they attended Christiansburg High School. After Jack graduated from Virginia Tech, they continued to live in the Christiansburg area before moving to North Carolina.

Jean worked in the post office, telephone office, powder plant and as a professional administrative assistant for several churches, ATT, and Allied Chemical in New Jersey. Jean loved to hostess and to entertain. She will be remembered fondly by all her friends and family for her open and warm home and her great meals for both small and large groups. While in Southport, she was actively involved in her church, Southport Presbyterian, the women’s club, garden club, community activities and serving the elderly.

Jean is survived by two sons, Barry Rhudy and wife, Pattie, of Charlotte, N.C., and Bob Rhudy and wife, Teresa, of Union Hall, Va.; her brother, Richard Graham and wife, Marilyn, of Southport, N.C.; six grandchildren, Tanya Calkins and husband, Tim, of Charlotte N.C., Crista Misler and husband, John, of Virginia Beach, Va., Jennifer Jamison and husband, Dean, of Martinsville, Va., Michelle Garland and husband, Jason, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Ty Rhudy and wife, Shelley, of Durham, N.C., and Carrie Elmore, of Glade Hill, Va. Jean has 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are planned for December 27, 2009, at the Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg, Va. Visitation is scheduled from 1 until 3 p.m. and services begin 3 p.m. with interment following at Sunset Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to www.hornefuneralservice.com.

A memorial service will be scheduled for early next year at Southport Presbyterian Church in Southport, N.C.
