Melvin Louis Reed, 71, of Floyd, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 14, 2008. He is preceded in death by his wife, Eloise L. Reed; his parents, Walter and Amanda Reed; his sister, Edna Bishop; and his brother Elvin S. Reed.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Carolyn and John Kirtner, of Riner, Jackie and Neil Muir, of Dublin, and Ronnie and Joyce Lester, of Floyd; four grandsons and their spouses, John and Dana Kirtner, of Blacksburg, Jamie and Tammy Kirtner, of Riner, Eric Lester, of Floyd, and Brannon Reed, of Dublin; four great grandchildren, Kerri Peraldo, of Beckley, W.Va., Derick Bland, of Blacksburg, Deidre Kirtner, of Blacksburg, and Austin Kirtner, of Riner; one great-great granddaughter, Alyssa Bland, of Christiansburg; three sisters, Velma Townley, of Floyd, Elsie Dudley, of Blacksburg, and Ima Cannaday, of Roanoke. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as his loving church family, whom he loved very much, at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren in Alum Ridge, where he was a devoted member.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2008, at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren with the Reverend Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday, August 15, 2008, after 1 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home where the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
