Marvin Gray Reed, 83, of Christiansburg, Va., passed away on Friday, February 27, 2009. Marvin was born on July 30, 1925. He was preceded in death by his father, Harley E. Reed; his mother, Lilly Myers Reed; his sisters, Dorothy Crismond, Juliette Hienline; and a brother, Douglas Reed.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Lynette Taylor Reed; his sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas G. Reed, Donald L. Reed and Diana, Michael T. Reed and Debby; sisters, Patsy R. Baltz, of Mechanicsville, Va., and Francis R. Cannaday, of Christiansburg. Pawpaw was the “Good Old Boy” to his grandchildren, Aaron Reed, of Roanoke, Amber Reed, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Caleb Reed, of Christiansburg, Matthew, Wyatt, Autumm, and Faith Reed, all of Elliston. Also surviving are close friends, Bettie Maxey, Tommy Myers, Harold Akers, Jimmy Blount, and Zeke Epperly; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marvin was a veteran of the United States Navy serving on the USS Orestes in the South Pacific. He served as an active member with the Christiansburg Fire Department for 30 years. He was also a 50 year member of Kazim Shriners, a member of the Montgomery County Game and Fish Club, Christiansburg Hunting Club and a Masonic Veteran of McDaniel Lodge #86 AM&FM.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to the staff of the Claytor Lake wing of Heritage Hall for the special care they received.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2009, at The Horne Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. David Goodpasture and the Rev. Brian Seagle officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
