rakes_wilton_mWilton M. Rakes, 94, of Radford, Va., departed this life for his Heavenly home on Friday, September 16, 2011. He was born on August 8, 1917, in Shawsville, to Sam and Matilda Rakes. He has been reunited with those who preceded him in death: his parents; a brother, Mason Rakes; two sisters, Helen Reed and Sylvia Linkous; and a daughter, Barbara Green. Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Vada Rakes; three daughters, Gloria Stotelmeyer, Brenda Shepherd and husband, Harvey, and Teresa Phillips and Rick; three sons, Dennis Rakes and wife, Diane, David Rakes and wife, Sharon, and Wesley Rakes and wife, Lori; sister, Stella Akers. Mr. Rakes was also the grandfather of 22 grandchildren and numerous great- grandchildren. He was the owner and operator of Rakes Upholstery & Refinishing, located on Peppers Ferry Road, for over 40 years. He was also a dedicated and loyal member of Belview United Methodist Church for almost 50 years. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 18, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg. The Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 19, 2011, at Belview United Methodist Church, Radford, with the Rev. Stan Thompson and the Rev. Sebert Rorrer officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Belview United Methodist Church, 3619 Onyx Drive, Radford, VA 24141, in honor of Mr. Rakes.
