Ocie Peters Rakes, 96, of Floyd, passed away Monday April 30, 2007.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Durward Rakes. Mrs. Rakes was a member of the Floyd United Methodist Church, Past Noble Grand in Rebekah Lodge, Secretary of Floyd County Retired Teachers, member of Floyd Womans Club, and an avid bridge player. She enjoyed the bridge games with her many friends.

She taught school in a one-room school (Rifton) at the age of 18. During the years she taught at County Line and Harmon one-room schools as well as her home school of Pizarro. She also taught in Vancouver, Wash. Public Schools during World War II, and retired in 1976 from Floyd Elementary School. Mrs. Rakes and her husband owned and operated U-Toll-Em Inn and Motel for a number of years.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Kaye and Mary Ann Rakes, Williamsburg, Va., Tom and Glenda Rakes, Martin, Tenn.; granddaughter, Sabrina Fahey and husband Jessen, Morrison, Colo.; stepgranddaughter, Karee Cox, Memphis, Tenn.; stepgrandson, Patrick Cox, Memphis, Tenn.; sister, Peggy Harris, Floyd; sisters-in-law, Jean Robbins, Myra Peters, Aretta Peters, all of Floyd; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at Floyd United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Gregory officiating. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
