Joseph Madison Rakes, 101, formerly of Dublin, passed away Thursday, July 16, 2015 In the Snyder Nursing Home, Salem. Born July 5, 1914, in Patrick County, he was the son of the late George Lee Rakes and Naomi Alberta McCormick Rakes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Beulah Dalton Rakes; a daughter, Beulah Jane Rakes; three sisters, Bertha Dalton, Alma Owens, Jeston Rakes; and one brother, Sidney Rakes.

Mr. Rakes was a carpenter and home builder for 40 years in Pulaski, Wythe and Montgomery counties. He and his wife resided near Claytor Lake State Park for many years. He was a member of the Dublin Baptist Church.

He is survived by his children, Bonnie Clark and husband, Fred – Dublin, Linda Marshall and husband, Billy – Salem, Larry Rakes and wife, Deborah – Forest; grandchildren, Natalie Clark, Todd Marshall and Lori Rakes; great-grandchildren, Zachery Biggs, Bethany Biggs, and Victoria Marshall; six great, great grandchildren; brother, Noah Rakes and wife, Barbara-Locust Grove; sister, Ethel Cox –Claudeville; sisters-in-law, Violet Rakes – Pulaski , Jean Shell and husband, W. G. – Roanoke.

The family would like to thank Snyder Nursing Home in Salem for the wonderful loving care our Dad received.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 20, 2015, at the Bower Funeral Home, Chapel – Pulaski with the Rev. Dennis Jones officiating. Interment will follow at the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Monday.
