Sherman D. Raines, 82, of Rich Creek, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg, Va. Born August 1, 1924 at Rich Creek, he was the son of the late Andy Calvin and Arlenia Cecil Raines.

Mr. Raines was a retired employee of the Celanese Corp., Narrows, Va., a World War II U.S. Army Veteran, a member of the First United Methodist Church, Rich Creek, Va., John Dove Lodge #78 A.F&A.M., Peterstown, W.Va., American Legion Post #68 and VFW Post #6000, Narrows, Va. and the Rich Creek Lions Club.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Gwinn and Ollie Ratcliffe; and three brothers, Willie, Andy and John Raines.

Survivors include his wife of over 57 years, Ruth Mann Raines; one son, S.D. Raines of Peterstown, W.Va.; and one daughter, Debbie Martin and husband, Donnie of Newport, Va.; three brothers, Otis Raines of Rich Creek, Va., Narvell Raines of Wirtz, Va., and Lonnie Raines of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Lurie Bailey and husband, Clyde of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Billy, Donnie and Amy Martin, all of Newport, Va. and Jeffrey Raines of Orlando, Fla.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, January 20, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church, Rich Creek, Va., with the Rev. Aubrey Whitlow officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at the Sunrise Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Rich Creek, Va.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2006, where a Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home in Peterstown, W,Va., friends may also call at the church one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Memorial Fund at the First United Methodist Church, Rich Creek, Va.
