Purcell, Carroll (Coach) Augusta
Carroll (Coach) Augusta Purcell, 76, of Dublin, VA, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2015. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Maggie Purcell, his brother Leroy Purcell and his sister Ruby Elmore.
Carroll was born on December 3, 1938 in Daytona Beach, FL, graduating from Campbell Street High School and Shaw University with a Master’s degree in Education. Carroll spent over 30 years as a teacher and coach at Christiansburg Institute and Radford High School where he coached basketball, football, and cross country.
After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, and hunting. Carroll also enjoyed cheering on his favorite sports teams including Virginia Tech, the Boston Celtics, and the Washington Redskins. He was an active member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church. Besides being a devoted and loving father and grandfather, Carroll touched the lives of many by being involved throughout the community.
He is survived by two sons, Wayne Purcell of Christiansburg, VA, and Jay Purcell and his wife, Carmen of Charlotte, N.C; his grandchildren, Austin, Taylor and Bryce Purcell. He is also survived by his five sisters, Leila Purcell, Ollie Mae Kemp, Hilda Purcell, Martha Mays, and Willie May Twiggs and his brother, John Purcell. He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews as well as numerous extended family members and friends, all whose lives he touched.
The viewing for Carroll will be held between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM with funeral services beginning at 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Radford with the Rev. Eric Ramey officiating.
