Psathas, George Gus

On May 11, 2017, our Number One Greek, George Gus Psathas (84) of Pearisburg, VA passed from his earthly life into his new eternal heavenly home.

George was born in Welch, WV on May 20, 1932 to Gus and Mary Tourlakis Psathas from Milos, Greece. He was preceded in death by both parents, his brother Harry and wife Jenny of Narrows, brother Bill and wife Bonnie of Pearisburg, and sister Katherine and husband Paul Stone of Chambersburg PA.

George graduated from Pearisburg High school and attended classes at NRCC. He spent most of his life in Giles County. George worked at Celanese, Giles County Sherriff’s Office and helped with the Capitol Cafe Family Business in his early years. He was a member of The Castle Rock Baptist Church, Giles Masonic Lodge Number #106, Giles County Shrine Club, charter member of the Kazim Misfits, The Kazim Shrine Temple in Roanoke, The Pearisburg Lions Club and he served on the Town Council for many years. In 2004 he was selected as Giles County Citizen of the Year. He served his country in the Medic Unit of The U.S. Army and was an avid supporter of The Giles High School Spartans. George befriended all who crossed his path whether they be people or animals.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 54 years, Janet Stanwitz Psathas of Pearisburg, his son Timmy Psathas of Pearisburg, daughter Tammy & husband Steve Lightcap of Poolesville, MD, son Jeff and wife Connie Psathas of Sharpsburg GA and their children. He is also survived by his sister Sophia Panopoulos of Fredericksburg, VA.

Funeral Services are as follows: Viewing Sunday, May 14th 5-8pm , First United Methodist Church, Funeral Monday, May 15th at 1:00pm, First United Methodist Church, Pearisburg with the Rev Gary Poff, the Rev Michael Mitchener and Pastor Micah Steele officiating. Burial will follow at Birchlawn Cemetery in Pearisburg with a celebration meal of his life at Castle Rock Baptist Church, Pembroke, VA afterwards.

In lieu of flowers, the family’s goal is to start a fund for scholarships and animal care in honor of his beloved dog Milos. More information to follow.

George touched the lives of many people and animals during his time on this earth. Despite our heartbreak, we rejoice in knowing this is not the end! Chapter one of eternity has begun for our Georgie and we look forward to that wonderful reunion one sweet day. YaSou as we wait for that glorious day.
