powers_calvin_coolidgeCalvin Coolidge Powers, 91, of Floyd, Va., passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, September 19, 2015. He was born on May 2, 1924 in Dickenson County in Clinchco, Va. to the late Webb and Virdie Stanley Powers.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by 6 brothers and 6 sisters. He is survived by his loving wife, Annie Lorene Powers; sons, Calvin D. Powers and his wife, Lois, and Terry L. Powers and his wife, Lisa; stepdaughters, Brenda Farmer and her husband, Lee, and Beverly Sutphin and her husband, Troy; grandchildren, Diana Ferguson, Debbie Woolwine, Amy Lawhorn, Bonnie Powers, Angie Lovero, and Andy Powers; step-grandson, Scott Harman; 16 great-grandchildren; and sister, Willie Mae Phipps.

Pop loved to play golf and was known as “Ol Golfer” to many. He attended Tuggles Gap Baptist Church in Floyd, Va. He was retired from AFLAC. Pop proudly served our country as a Gunner’s Mate – 1st Class in the US Navy. He was a WWII veteran.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 in the funeral home’s chapel with Rev. Mike Bowman officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke.

The family requests that no flowers be sent. Donations, however, may be made to the American Red Cross or to Good Samaritan Hospice. The family would like to thank all the friends and neighbors that have been so wonderful and caring during Pop’s illness. Thank you for the prayers, visits, and wonderful food. Also, thank you to Good Samaritan Hospice and their support.
